Section 184 (Housing Act)
Section 184 of the Housing Act 1996 deals with enquiries into cases of homelessness or threatened homelessness.
It applies in situations when a local authority has reason to believe that an applicant may be homeless or may be threatened with homelessness. The local authority may make enquiries to determine whether the applicant is eligible for assistance and, if so, whether any duty is owed under the provisions of the Act.
Section 184 also provides for the local authority to make enquiries about whether the applicant has a local connection with the district of another local housing authority in England, Wales or Scotland.
Once the enquiries have been made, the local authority should inform the applicant of their decision and the reasons behind the decision.
